Inspired by the story of Sadako Sasaki who was a girl that survived the bombing of Hiroshima but died ten years later of Leukemia thought to have been caused by the radiation poisoning from the bombing. While in the hospital she heard of the Japanese legend that if a person folds 1000 cranes their wish would be granted. Sadako spent the remainder of her life folding paper cranes in hopes she would be healed.
